Yper. - Doodelijk werkongeval.
Woensdag namiddag, rond twee uur, is hier
een smartelijk werkongeval gebeurd in de in
opbouw zijnde St-Maartens Kathedraal. De
ig jarige glaswerker, Daniel Matten, van
Veurne, sedert korten tijd in dienst bij zijn
oom, M. Rossey, was er bezig aan het hoog-
portaal een werk uit te voeren toen hij op de
acht meters hooge stelling uitgleed en het
evenwicht verloor. De ongelukkige jongeling
viel het hoofd voorover op een hoop steenen
en werd vreeselijk aan het hoofd verwond.
Een bijgeroepen geneesheer beval den ge
kwetste in allerhaast naar het gasthuis ov.er te
brengen en, na eenigen tijd vruchteloos rond-
zoeken naar de ambulanciewagen van het
Roode Kruis, weid de gewonde heel voor
zichtig bij middel van een gewoon autorijtuig
naar het hospitaal vervoerd, waar hij, niet
tegenstaande de beste zorgen, korten tijd
nadien bezweken is.
Stelling weggewaaid Donderdag
morgen is, ten gevolge van den hevjgen wind,
de houten stelling, die een tiental meters
boven op St-Maartens toren uitstak en waarin
de ophaalbak gevestigd was om de bouw
materialen boven op den toren te brengen,
naar beneden gestort. De weggerukte stelling
is gansch verwrongen en gebroken op de
werf der steenzagers, nevens de kerk, geval
len. Gelukkig dat, op het oogenblik van het
voorval, daar juist niemand aan het werk
was, want anders hadden wij voorzeker erger
ongelukken te betreuren gehad.
Langemarck. Moorddadige ont
ploffing. Woensdag morgen rond 8 uur
deed zich een geweldigen slag hooren in den
hof van den Heer Cotteau de Patin, Onmid
dellijk snelden talrijke menschen die zich op
dit oogenblik op de mai kt bevonden, ter
plaats en zagen er den 70 jarigen ouderling,
den genaamden Plamon, le venloos ten gronde
liggen. De beide handen waren afgerukt en
het slachtoffer droeg een diepe wonde in de
borst. De kop van dén obus werd naderhand
in een nabijgelegen villa van den Heer
Cotteau de Patin ongeschonden teruggevon
den en hij droeg niet het minste spoor van
beitel noch spade. Heel waarschijnlijk zal de
ouderling al spitten dezen obus hebben bloot
gemaakt en misschien, al pogen hem van
kant te. leggen, het gevaarlijk tuig hebben
laten vallen.

Cinema.
British Legiosi
The Extraordinary General Meeting of the
Ypres Branch of the' British Legion took
place on Saturday 23rd November last at the
British Club.
It is estimated that at least two thirds of
the male population of the British Colony
were present and a most successful reunion;
resulted..
During the course of the afternoon, this;
aims of. the Legion were explained very
lucidly and fully, and the results of its work
to date made known.
Such figures as 38.000 men found em
ployment in one year, /41000 advanced for
the children of ex servicemen in order that
.they might obtain the full benefits of scholar
ships .won by their own efforts, but which
they would not have beën able to take advan
tage of without the Legion's help, and
^25ooo spent upon the purchase of necessary
books for these and other childiea, were
figures that opened the eyes of many as to
the value of the work being done, and of the
future possibilities of good coming from the
work.
Although a member of the Legion since
1921, these proved figures weré a real eye-
opener to me.
The work in connection with the help and
settlement of those poor ex servicemen striken
with that most awful of diseases, tuberculosis,
revealed the fruition of a splendidly thought
out scheme of help for the almost helpless.
1 wo villages have been entirely given over
to ex-soldiers and their families, where this-
dread disease is fought upon the nv st up to
date lines, and here living happily, with the
best possible advice and treatment always at
hand, they are living their lives, no longer a
drag upon the rest of the community, but
wage earning to such an extent that they can
keep themselves an th ir families,, and goods
made by them duiicg one year only, ai d fron
one vdlage only, realised ^235- o.
The work of the Legion in connection
with the pilgrimages to the battlefields is qu'te
well known. The whole world interests itself
in the regularly announced yearly increase in
sales of the Flanders Poppies, and takes i's
part in making this increase, but in the matter
ot helping the Legion to help the ex service
men to help themselves, are the ex-servicem1 n
doing their part
The re-birth of the Ypres Branch of 'he
British Legion, is at any rate a sign that soffle
of them are coming to their senses.
