130 The Ypres Times. SAFETY FIRST IN THE SALIENT. The foilowing contribution, written for Punch from Ypres five years ago, evidently went astray and has only now turned up. Dear Mr. Punch, Ypres, May 1917. I have heen so much struck (metaphorically, of course) by the posters so liberally displayed throughout London offering advice for the safety of civilians, that I have drawn up a few similar maxims which I hope to introduce in the trenches on my return. They ought to be the means of preventing many accidents to our brave fellows, due to thought lessness. When you look over a parapet do not lose your head. In alighting after a mine explosion step out with your right foot. Wait until the 'bus stopsand a little while afterwards. When you see a shell coming keep either to the right or left. The middle way is dangerous. In boarding a moving trench try to be as stationary as possible. In crossing No Man's Land in an assault, always face the music. When you see a minenwerfer about to explode, seek a refuge. Be careful not to fall into a crater. You might get your feet wet. If you fail to stop a bullet that is exceeding the speed limit, report its number to the company sergeant-major. If the traffic during an engagement is heavy, put your trust in the bayonet. Safety first. Yours, etc., T. O. T. THE STUD THAT FAILED Ill 1 1 IYom &co° S|R- 1 1 llj (I "«NT fit &unRANTEE fl FitJ 1—1 IlflSwl DKESS SOT I »«TH 01* /"Si NO FIT 1 ffJ KaÏÏ?
