Visit of H.R.H. Princess Beatrice to the Pavilion, Shepherd's Bush. Extracts from The Ypres Times Cinema Supplement. 115 That wonderful screen epic of Ypres was presented at the Shepherd's Bush Pavilion for the first time on the evening of November 9th, when H.R.H. Princess Beatrice graciously visited the Cinema. The Guard of Honour consisted of the 64th (7th London) Field Brigade, R.A., T.F., also representatives of the ex-Service men who are members of the League. In the entrance to the Cinema the uniforms and decorations made a gallant display relieved by the Territorials in service dress. H.R.H. was- received at the entrance by Kathleen, Viscountess Falmouth, Vice-Chairman of the Appeal Committee, Lieut -General Sir William Pulteney, Chairman Executive Committee, Ypres League, and Mr. Forsythe, the Manager. The Hon. Alice Douglas Pennant, Mrs. Edwards, and Mrs. I. Davies, Proprietress of the Pavilion, had the honour of being presented to H.R.H. by Kathleen Viscountess Falmouth. Col. H. V. Combs (commanding 5th Bn. Queen's Own Royal West KentRegt.), the Officer Commanding the Guard of Honour, Mr. Ashmead Bartlett, M.P., Captain F. H. Davies, Hon. Treasurer, and Mr. Forsythe, had the honour of being presented by Lieut.-General Sir William Pulteney. After the presentations H. R.H.accompanied by Lady Falmouth, Lieut -General Sir William Pulteney,. Mrs. Edwards, and attended by Miss Cockrane and Mr. Victor Corkran, proceeded to the Royal Box, which was gay with flags and bunting. Among those present were Lady Pulteney, Lady Alexander, Miss I. Ashmead Bartlett, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Bulteel, Mrs. F. H. Davies, Mr. H. P. Hansel], Mr. and Mrs. Fox Pitt, Captain and Mrs. C. Alliston, Colonel and Mrs. G. T. Brierley, Major and Mrs. Montague Jones, Colonel and Mrs. Browne, Mr. Draycott Dell, Lt.-Col. Hon. Trevor Lawrence, and Lt.-Col. J. Sherwood Kelly, V.C., etc., and Mrs. Sherwood Kelly, Mr. J. C. Juval, Mr. Wharnford Davis, Major J. M. Maxwell Lyte and Major C. J. Edwards. Mrs. Israel Davies, Proprietress of the Marble Arch Cinema (where we had a stall for six weeks), and who is also Proprietress of Shepherd's Bush and Lavender Hill Cinemas, gave permission for a large stall to be erected in the vestibule. Mr. Forsythe, the Manager, made the most excellent arrangements both for the decoration of the stall and for his vestibule. The stall was under the organisation of Major Lennard, assisted by six men from the Artillery Association. Nothing could have been better than the way they carried out their duties, and we should like to recommend that if people are requiring thoroughly competent and honest men for work of this sort they should apply to the Artillery Association. In fact they were so keen and energetic and their salesmanship so excellent that the results from the stall surpassed all our expectations. Both Major Lennard and his Staff are to be very much congratulated on their work. The souvenir copy of the Wipers song had been specially printed for H.R.H. s visit and was brought in large quantities, also the souvenirs were sold out and various publications of the League had large sales. Before the film commenced Lieut.-General Sir William Pulteney spoke on behalf of the League. The speech was straightforward and soldier-like, and carried out the spirit of Ypres which was to do your job and talk about it as little as possible. The film was well produced and a very realistic touch was given when the band played the song Wipers an officer came on across the stage with his men, stopped and asked one of them for a fight and then passed across the stage singing Whistle the Way You Whistled up to Wipers," Mr. Forsythe, the able Manager, is much to be congratulated on the evening. On Tuesday, Captain Alliston addressed a large audience at the same Cinema, and on Wednesday, Mr. Ellis Ashmead Bartlett, the late M.P. for Hammersmith, made a speech that carried a very large audience with him. On Friday, Col. Sherwood Kelly, V.C., spoke on behalf of the League in spite of the fact that^he had only recently undergone a severe operation. The whole week was a great success, thanks to the Manager and Staff of the Pavilion. It is not surprising that so much kindness was shown to the League at this Cinema, as Mrs. Davis is well known for her charitableness.
