MADEMOISELLE FROM ARMENTIERES. Memories of the war and of one of the most famous of British Army songsMademoiselle from Armentieres have been recalled by the mysterious death of Mile. Laure Millanquet at La Chapelle d'Armentieres. She was 44 years old. In 1914 and 1915 she was a beautiful young woman, the centre of attraction in the little billeting village behind the British lines, where she had taken refuge. Mile. Millanquet had lived alone since the war, and it was whispered locally that she was mourning for some young lover who had been killed. Certainly she refused many offers of marriage and rarely left her solitary house. She was found dead, and it was thought that she had committed suicide. Police investiga tions, however, have led them to doubt this theory, and a search is being made for a man who, it is said, was seen to leave her house the night before her death was discovered.
