A REPRESENTATIVE congregation of one hundred visitors from England
and about two hundred from Ypres and the neighbourhood attended a
memorial service at 9.30 a.m. in St. George's Church on June 7th, con
ducted by the Bishop of Fulham. In a well-chosen address the Bishop expressed
the deep regret of all at the absence of Field-Marshal Viscount Plumer on account
of ill-health, and emphasized the importance of the occasion wbich had brought
them together. He further laid stress on the generosity of the Belgian Govern
ment in granting civil status to the Ypres British Settlement.
After the hymn God of our Fathers had been sung, General Sir William
Pulteney, in the absence of Lord Plumer asked the Bishop "to dedicate the
memorials in affectionate memory of our comrades who made the supreme sacri
fice." The representatives of units and relatives then placed themselves close to
the memorials with which they were connected, and commencing on the south side
