INFORMAL GATHERINGS THE YPRES TIMES 247 The trip to Ostend and three hours exploring the town were pleasant, and then the party entrained for Ypres. During the stay here they visited places familiar to those who served in the Salient during the Great War. A visit was also paid to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Belgium. The party were also present at the Menin Gate for the sounding of The Last Post," which takes place each evening at 9 o'clock. All who took part in this trip were much impressed by the grandeur of the Menin Gate Memorial, which bears the names of 55,000 men who have no known burial place. This brings home the simple fact, writes a correspondent, that this great building is not a monument for gloating over victory, but rather to show that our absent comrades are still remembered. Admiration was expressed by everyone at the beautiful manner in which the British War Cemeteries are maintained by the Imperial War Graves Commission. The arrangements for travel and hotel accom modation were kindly undertaken by Capt. de Trafford, M.C., Secretary, Ypres League, to whom the success of the tour was chiefly due. THE ALDERSHOT TATTOO. A party of London members of the Ypres League went to Aldershot on Friday, June 19th, to see the Military Tattoo. This trip was made on the invitation of Mr. E. Glover, the Tottenham and Edmonton representative of the League, who is also the Hon. Secretary of the Gothic Staff Social Club, Edmonton, this being one of the club's annual events. The League members filled one of the two saloon motor coaches which conveyed the whole party to Aldershot. A start was made from Edmonton shortly after 6 p.m., in a torrential downpour, after which the weather improved. Those taking part in the trip were picked up at various points en route The Tattoo was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The wonderful organization of the Tattoo pro gramme, as well as the arrangements for parking motors and the control of the traffic, called for general appreciation. Edmonton was reached about 2.15 a.m. It is to be hoped that members of the League will avail themselves next year of the opportunity of joining this part in the visit to Aldershot to see the Military Tattoo. Mr. J. Boughey is to be complimented in getting together so many of the League members for this event and thus adding to its success.
