Message to Members of the Ypres League,
1933»
Supplement to Ypres Times, January, 1933.
Government House,
Firnborough,
Hants.
May I, as the new President of The Ypres League, address a personal
message to all members of the League.
Firstly, may I thank you all for your kindness in electing me as your
President in the place of our late and beloved ChiefField-Marshal Lord
Plumerthe man who defended Ypres through those long years against
tremendous odds.
I can but promise to do my utmost to carry on his great work for The
Ypres League as he would wish and expect me to do, but I can naturally
only be a shadow of the Chief himself. History will record his great
work. History will no doubt tell how he held the Salient by his stout heart,
by his thoughtfulness for everyone who served under his command, even
the humblest, and by his great courage and sense of justice and honour.
He was a great leader, who inspired and won the affection of all those who
had the privilege of serving under him.
It is very encouraging to me to know that several hundred new members
have joined the League since his death, evidently with the intention of
carrying on his great work. To these new members I tender my grateful
thanks, and to all members I would say, Good luck to you all in 1933,
and let us make 1933 ^e year in which we redouble our efforts as a token
of respect to our late Chief to whom our Country and Empire owe so
much."
C. H. Harington, General.
President, The Ypres League.
