PURLEY.
The Spring Golf Meeting of the Purley Branch
took place at Coulsdon Court Golf Club on
Thursday, May nth, when 37 members took
part in an 18-hole Bogey competition. Early
returns gave no indication of what was to come,
but gradually improvement took place until the
last three matches in produced better scores,
and Capt. B. A. Forster (8) last of all, won the
Fifth Wipers Cup with a return of one up.
Capt. E. Featherstone (scr.) and Gunner H. M.
Brown (18) tied for second prize at one down.
At the supper which followed the first prize
was presented to Capt. Forster, who sportingly
promised to provide a cup for the Autumn
Meeting if this can be arranged. Many members
present gave verbal and or other noisy support
to the proposal, and the Chairman promised the
early reconsideration of the Committee which
had proposed to discontinue the Autumn
Meetings.
Thanks were expressed to Cmdr. H. D. C.
Stanistreet, the Secretary of the C.C.G. Club,
and the Chairman, for their part in the pro
ceedings.

First and Second Battles.
The day after Operation Orders were issued,
some of the troops got to it, Lieuts. Bernard
Jones and Brill engaging Commander Monk and
Capt. Beatty (sounding supiciously like a strong
naval party) at Woodcote Park. After a dog
fight the latter got away with the match on the
18th, more by strategy than golfthe enemy
conceding a hole which in fact they had won, to
be all square.
Capts. Scott and Green entertained Com
mander Stanistreet and Capt. McLaurin at
Woodcote Park, put up a very good show and
won 54.
At the same time and on the same course Lieut.
Bellingham and Capt. Bung Brewer were de
feating Major Harris and Capt. Streat 3 and 1
some adventures are reported.
Majors Meakin and Wayte claimed special
merit for two reasons (1) For playing off in
very good time (2) for defeating Lieut.-Colonel
Inglis and Major Alderson, a very hot side, by
3 and 2. They admit, however, laming one of
the enemy first All done at Croham Hurst.
Capt. Douse and Cpl. Taylor beat Capt. Rae
and Sergt. Crute 5 and 3 no details.
Cpl. Meredith and Lieut. Hines conceded some
strokes to Majors Legg and Forster, and just got
away with the match at Woodcote Park at the
20th, after being dormy three down. Some
battle.
Capt. Waghorn and Lieut. Hancock met Lieut.
Duncan and Capt. George Mutton at Woodcote,
and won on the last green one up.
The same evening, on the same course, The
Bombardier and Lieut. Jack Lindsay went for
Gnr. Kerr and Capt. Tissington, won 3 and 2,
and so avenged the previous year's defeat.
It was a wretched wet evening for battle, but
turned into quite a wet night after supper, when
the Coulsdon Court members are reported to
have recovered some of their battle losses at
vingt-y."
Capt. Smither and Major Tomlinson engaged
Capt. Lund and Major Russell on their home
course, Coulsdon Court, and reported victory at
the 20th. Sounds like another dog-fight.
Finally, General Gough and Commander
Shelton met Major Leek and Lieut. Wiltshire at
Purley Downs, where the latter put up some
rough stuff to win 3 and 2, finishing with three
birdies." It is reported that when he made
a bad shot, the General swore like the trooper
that he is
So ended the First Battles, all done in time.
The Second Battles started by Lieut. Midgley
and Capt. Forster walking over, the enemy
capitulating.
Next the Staff team, Capt. Featherstone and
Major G. Carr, met the Naval party, Monk and
Beatty, at Coulsdon Courtthe latter lost three
