THE YPRES TIMES
26
TO ALL OUR MEMBERS.
We wish all members of the Ypres League
the best of good wishes for the New Year
with the hope that 1934 may bring success to
their personal as well as business interests.
The last quarter has been notable for the
number of members who have been so kind
as to submit to headquarters the names and
addresses of relatives and friends possessing
treasured associations with Ypres, resulting in
many enrolling and whom we are delighted to
welcome as members. We thank our staunch
members for giving the League such ad
mirable support.
We have no reason to be discontented with
the League's work in 1933, in fact the year
has proved a successful all-rounder, and
special gratitude is due to our Purley, London,
Colchester and Sheffield Branches. We con
gratulate them on their commendable work.
It has been a revelation for us to watch
the astonishing progress of our youngest
Branch, namely Colchester.
Space does not permit mention of all those
Corresponding Members and others who have
helped individually, but a word of praise is
deserving to Mr. S. C. Allen-Olney, of Hove,
who has again come conspicuiously to the fore,
not only in the promotion of the Junior
Branch, but also in his successful efforts to
recruit newr adult members.
1934 promises to be a year of great activity.
A large quantity of the revised Ypres League
explanatory pamphlet has been circulated and
proving its worth. We would like all mem
bers to apply to headquarters for a few of
these pamphlets for the purpose of interesting
prospective recruits whenever an opportunity
arises.
The travel prospects for the coming year
are good. We hear from outside sources that
the number of persons making pilgrimages
to the cemeteries and battlefields is on the
decrease, but happily to relate we are unable
to corroborate such a rumour in respect of
the Ypres League Pilgrimage and Independent
Travel, because enquiries to date are already
in excess of previous years.
It is especially pleasing to report that many
of our 1933 pilgrims have not only joined as
members of the League, but signified their
intention to travel again this year under our
auspices and bring some of their relatives and
friends.
May we respectfully ask all our members to
add one good resolution to their list for the
New Year, and that is
To resolve to recruit at least one new
member for the Ypres League in 1934.
We earnestly trust that every member will
accept our suggested resolution, because no
better service can possibly be rendered to the
League in its great work of Commemoration.
We, at headquarters, are determined to exer
cise everything in our power to make the
Ypres League a stronger force than ever
during its fourteenth anniversary year.
We express renewed gratitude and best
wishes to all our faithful supporters and look
forward to enjoy their same loyal co-operation
in 1934.
RECRUITING COMPETITION.
Congratulations to our Purley Branch who
have won the 15 prize with a return of 45
new members for 1933, but the race between
Purley and Colchester was so close that we
have decided to award a very deserving second
prize of £2 10s. Od. to Colchester.
Well done these two Branches
THAT INDIVIDUAL EFFORT.
The Ypres League is fortunate in having
such a loyal member in Mr. C. J. H. Cope,
who has repeated his kindness of 1932 in
organising, so successfully at his own expense,
another lantern lecture at St. Andrew's Hall,
West Kensington, on November 6th last when
a collection was made in aid of the League
funds.
The lecturer was Mr. Arthur E. Dawes,
D.C.M., formerly of the 20th London Regi
ment who spoke on Comradeship during the
Great War and showed us some exceedingly
interesting slides of France, Salonika and
Palestine.
Miss E. Booth also deserves an equal share
of thanks for her kindness in lecturing at
Oxford and for her generosity in organising
a collection for the League funds.
Mr. Cope and Miss Booth are to be heartily
congratulated on their staunch individual
efforts for the welfare of the Ypres League
and we owe them both a very deep debt of
gratitude.
PILGRIMAGE DEPOSIT ACCOUNT.
In the last October edition of the Ypres
Times a leaflet was inserted describing the
Ypres League's new easy payment scheme for
members and friends desirous of visiting
cemeteries, memorials and battlefields in
France and Belgium under the League's
auspices.
There are already favourable signs that this
scheme will prove very popular, and all those
wishing to avail themselves of the facilities
offered are requested to complete the form
already in their possession when forwarding
the initial deposit.
Headquarters will, of course, be pleased to
supply additional forms if at any time required
by members and friends.
