"YPISODES"
With a view to still further increasing the popularity of our little quarterly, the
"Ypres Times" it has been decided to introduce a competition for the best Great War
episode or to which we intend to refer as "Ypisode" submitted by any Life Member or
Annual Subscriber during the year, 1935.
Each quarter's edition will contain a selection from those received and we feel
that they will provide excellent reading and create great interest amongst our members.
Ypisodes may be written on any incident at home or abroad which occurred during
the Great War period and may be submitted, not necessarily by members of the fighting
services because the competition is open to both sexes. Most of us can recall some par
ticular incident, humerous or otherwise, which if broadcast would provide much interest
and amusement to others.
We publish herewith two examples for guidance
Scene: back of Lancashire Farm on a
pitch black December night, 1916.
"C" Coy filing out through long wet grass
and self (after first spell in line)
bringing up the rear with Sergt X.
Silence only broken by continuous
strange whistling noises at our feet and
in long grass.
Puzzled at this, I ask: "Are those rats
squeaking Sergeant"
Rats, Sir, laughs the Sergeantthem's
bullets and there's too many of'em for
my liking.
2. SceneYpres Infantry Barracks, 1917:
programme of work-parties by night and
stay-at-home by day.
To make a diversion I had made a
fine set of "shadowgraphs" of "C" Coy
officers and placed the life-sized heads in
a row high up on the wall of our mess
before we cleared out for a spell in the
line.
Heard later that the incoming unit was
was not greatly impressed by this
martial array, one officer remarking
that there was plenty of "frightfulness"
outside.
"Forester."
Ypisodes will be judged by their merit and briefness will be strictly taken into
account.
From what in the opinion of the Judges are considered the six best Ypisodes sub
mitted throughout the year, the Editor will be asked to nominate the winner, and the
result will be published together with the winning Ypisode in the January, 1936 edition
of the "Ypres Times".
The successful competitor will be awarded the following prize
A WEEK-END TRIP TO YPRES (SATURDAY TO TUESDAY) WITH AN YPRES LEAGUE PILGRI
MAGE AT EASTER, WHITSUNTIDE, OR AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY, 3RD CLASS RAIL 2ND CLASS
BOAT WITH FULL BOARD AND 3 NIGHTS ACCOMMODATION TO INCLUDE TAXES AND
GRATUITIES AT THE HOTEL, AND A HALF-DAY MOTOR TOUR OF THE YPRES SALIENT.
