THE YPRES TIMES
British Legion Reunion
179
LORD ATHLONE'S appeal for funds for an Army and Air Force Memorial to the
late King Albert has brought to light some interesting relics saved from the ruins
of the old Cathedral.
One parcel contained a piece of stained glass with the lead partly melted, portions
of wood carving and a French rifle cartridge; they were packed in old newspapers of the
"Daily Mail" and the "Reading Standard."
The "Daily Mail" was dated Wednesday, 27th January, 1915, which was the
Kaiser's war birthday, and contains:
1. Picture of the Kaiser at the age of five years sitting on Queen Victoria's knee.
2. What the Kaiser has said."
Birthday war memories.
To his Western Army It is my Royal and Imperial Command that you concentrate
your energies for the immediate present upon one single purpose, that is, that you address
all your skill and all the valour of our soldiers to exterminate first the treacherous English
and to walk over French's contemptible little army."
3. Among an Estate Agent's advertisement
Come inland for safety."
Houses to let or for sale.
Another packet contained a beautiful piece of stained glass from the Cathedral.
These souvenirs will be returned to the authorities at Ypres in due course.
We trust that anyone who has souvenirs of a similiar description which come
from the Cathedral at Ypres will return them to the Headquarters of the Ypres League,
20, Orchard Street, Portman Square, London, W.l.
W. P. PULTENEY,
Lieut-General.
A large reunion of the Surrey British Legion visit Ypres at Easter, when they will
hand over to the authorities at Ypres, the sum of £400 to perpetuate the sounding of
the Last Postat the Menin Gate, and the ceremony on Easter Sunday will be followed
with great interest by all members of the Ypres League.
Our most hearty congratulations to the Surrey British Legion on having raised
such a magnificent sum.
