Wij bedanken den Heer Algemeen Bestuur
der* voor zijne dienstvaardigheid en durven
verhopen dat deze kwestie van het gebruik
der springstoffen spoedig en op een redelijke
wijze 7al opgelost worden. Wij raden ook
alle gemeenten aan zich onverwijld in regel te
stellen ten einde het werk te kunnen aanvan
gen na het weghalen der vruchten.
Zij hebben geen tijd meer te verliezen.
De omzendbrief van den Heer Minister
van Financiën, van den 7 Mei 11., waarvan
spraak in bovenstaanden brief, is in 't iransch
en in 't vlaamsch in ons nummer van 9 Mei
verschenen. Daarin staan tal van nuttige
bijzonderheden en wij manen de belangheb
bende gemeenten aan zich naar deze onder
richtingen wel te willen voegen.
Toekomende week geven wij het model van
lastenkohier dat bij den omzendbrief van 17
December ig3o gevoegd was. Dit zal voor de
gemeentebesturen van groot nut zijn, doch zij
hebben nochtans alle vrijheid de bepalingen
van dit officieel model te wijzigen volgens hun
goeddunken en ze te schikken naar de plaat
selijke omstandigheden.
Comme nous l'annoncions ici, la semaine
de notre Tuyndag, coïncidant avec celle du
Bank Holiday anglais, a vu les pèlerir.s
affluer en notre ville, et y apporter beaucoup
d'animation. Les registres de la Porte de
Menin se sont remplis de signatures.
Dimanche dernier, après une visite des
sites et cimetières des environs, un groupe de
25o membres de la British Legion del'«Home
Counties Area »est revenu en ville dansle cou
rant de l'apiès-midi et a déposé a 16 h. une
couronne au monument Yprois. lis y furent
reQUS par M. le bourgmestre qui leur adressa
l'allocution suivante

Ladies and Gentleman,
You were so kind to come, where came
from 19:4 to 1918 innumerous British soldiers,
not only from the British Isles but from all
the Dominions of the British Empire, spread
over the world.
Survivors of the great war, You would
revisit the famous Battlefield of the Salient
of Ypres, where the British Armies iought
during 4 years against Germany, and remem
ber your generosity, your courage, your
bravery, your tenacity, your sufferings and
your victoiy for King and Country.
Fathers and Mothers, Brothers and Sisters,
Widows and Orphans of falDn British Heroes,
You come to honour the giaves or the names
of your valiant Sons and brothers, Husbands
and Fathers, who, living, loved and liked
You, and whom You ever will like and love.
You come, wff re the British Empire graet-
ful erected a splendid Memorial to the glofy
of God, who gave the victory, and in memory
of the British Armies, which protected and
saved King and Country.
You come, where came His Majesty the
King George His Royal Highness the
Prince of Wales the High Princes Beatrice
of England, Mother of the fallen Prince of
Battenberg the Prime Ministers Baldwin of
England, Benneth of Canada, Bruce and
Scullin of Australia, and Forbes of New
Sealand the glorious Marshalls Lord French
and Earl Douglas Haig many Mayors of
England, besides the Lord Mayors Newton
and Batho of London many other civil and
military Authorities, and innumerous visitors.
You are so full of piety to day, that You will
honour not only your powerful British Em
pire which submit here Germany, but also
our violated Belgium, our bruised and burned
City, and our valiant Belgian King and Army,
which fought, as England, during 4 years
against the common ennemy, and that you
will lay down wreaths and flowers at the foot
of our War memorial, which represents a fallen
soldier of Ypres, crowned by 3 celestin angels,
lovely as You.
In the name of our King and Country, of
our Martyr City, and of all the parents and
friends of our fallen Heroes, I thank You.
A 7 heures, le bourgmestre M. Sobry, M.
le Commissaire de police et M. Flor. Vande-
voorde étaient leurs invités au souper de
l'Hötel Britannique, et durent y prononcer
des toasts.
A 20 h. 40, tous ces pèlerins se rejoignirent
de nouveau au monument Yprois et, précédés
des clairons du Last Post, se rendirent en
cortège a la Porte de Menin pour assister a la
cérémonie quotidienne. Après le Last Post,
tous les membres du Comité lurent présentés
a Lord stopford et au Colonel Parker, et
celui ci en les félicitant de leur initiative, a
déclaré qu' aucune cérémonie plus émou-
vante, sous un monument plus impression-
nant, en l'honneur d'un plus grand nomore
de morts, ne se peut rencontrer dans le
monde entier Ces voyageurs de la British
Legion n'ont quitté la ville que dans la nuit de
Jeudi a Vendredi, par train spécial. Lturs
journées ont été employées a visiter les envi
rons, ainsi qu'Ostende et Bruxelles, en
autocars.
Lundi, les Bell Ringers, de Leicester,
venus au nombre d'environ 60 par train
spécial, ont déoarqué au Kruiskalsijde et se
sont rendus a la nooghe et a i'tiill 60. Le
midi, ils se trouvaient sous la Porte de
Menin. oü leur chapelain, le Revd Jenkins,
d'Üxford, rendit hommage au devoüment
patiiotique des sonneurs de cloches anglais
qui s'engagèrent au nombre a'environ 40.000,
et dont 4000 laissèrent leurs vies sur les
champs de bataille. II annon£a que, pour
honorer leur mémoire d'une fagon digne de la
profession des héros morts, les Bell Ringers
allaient exécuter, sous la porte de Menin, les
sonneries religieuses habituelles dans la Grande
bretagne. Après une courte prière, six son
neurs,munis de 2 clochettes de sons différents,
firent entendre une longue sonnerie rappelant
celle des Eglises Anglaises. Les ïprois
présents ont été agréablement surpris d'enten
dre ce carillon, un peu grêle certes, maïs
dont toutes les notes étaient si pures et si
claires. La cérémonie dura environ 10 minu
tes. Le soir après le Last Post, des autocars
emmenèrent tout le groupe a Dunkerque oü ïl
s'embarqua sur le bateau d'Harwich.
Mardi, a n heures, au jardin public, se
forma un cortège de 320 pèlerins groupés par
le South Western Area de la British
Legion, et précédés des drapeaux de Ply
mouth, Mère, Slough, Bishop Sutton et
Churchhiff. M le bourgmestre les re<;ut offi
ciellement a l'Hotel de Ville, et leur adressa
l'allocution suivante
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Ou the occasion of the tenth anniversary of
the birth of the Britisti Legion, the West-
country men and women set forth again on a
pilgrimage to the Great war gravts of the
western Battlefields, and especially to the,
during 4 years, defended holy ground of
Ypies, which drunk ihe blood and received
the bodies ot 25o 000 British Heroes.
Many ex service men ol the Great war
would revisit the scenes of valour and sacn
fice once again, and many Fatheis and
Mothers, Brothers and Sisters, Widows and
Orphans, would kneal upon the giaves of
their dear Sons and Brothers, Husbanes and
Fathers, and flju.ish, at the Menin gate, the
names ol 56.000 British Heroes, whose tomb
stone is unknown.
As Burgomaster of Ypres, and Commander
of the British Empire, I am happy and p. oud
to receive you I wish you very welcome,
and present you the hommage of my deep
respect and gratitude.
Why violated Germany our petty and paci
fic Belgium in 1914, seeing that, on the
occasion of the birth of Belgium, it promised,
with England and others, its inviolable inde-
pendance
It had the culpable ambition to unite Bel
gium to Germany, dismember France, and
attack and bombard England.
To hinder this crime, and to impose the
needful peace in Europe, the noble King of
England declares, in 1914, up this memorable
anniversaryday, the war against Germany,
that violated Belgium He mobilised the
British Armies, not only of the British Isles,
but of all the Dominions of the British Empire
spread over the world during 4 years, irom
every where, the British warriors rushed to
Ypres against Germany, that would pass all
over Ypres to Calais and the straits.
Ypres was assieged and attacked, bombar
ded and gassed, bruised and burned, but
valiantly defended by the British Armies
it came to a ruin, but resisted during 4 years,
until the exhausting, the defleat and the flight
of Germany it was horribly wounded, but
saved England and Belgium.
To day, nearly rebuilt, conformably the
equity and the formal promises of Belgium's
Allies, it is happy and proud to receive its
valiant defenders, and saviours of Belgium.
Glorious ex service men, it salutes your
generosity, your courage, your bravery, your
tenacity, your sufferings and your victory I
Fallen Heroes, who gave your lives in the
defence of Ypres, it honours your careful
entertained cemeteries and your glitternames
and splendid Memorials, and it prays that
God may repay your supreme sacrifice
Fathers and Mothers, Brothers and Sisters,
Widows and Orphans of the fallen Heroes,
who come and return to Ypres with prayers,
tears and wreaths, it admires your piety, and
joins the tribute of its admiration' and grati
tude to yours
British Empire, which erected, at Menin
gate, grateful, a splendid Memorial to the
British Armies, who stood here from 1914 to
1918, and especialy to the 56 000 disappeart
soldiers without tomb stone, it glorifys your
powertul might and respect for Right and
Peace
British Legion, whose party it may salute
to day, it thanks you for your affection and
kind visit to its rebuilt city with confortable
hotels, where, every night lights the Menin gate
and laments the Last Post over the fallen

pious British People come and return, as
you, to this heroin, historical and famous city,
where Germany lost and Great Britain won
To Ypres rebuilt, 't was England's shield
La réception terminée, tous les pèlerins se
rendirent avec M. le Dourgmestre et M. le
secrétaire communal a la porte de Menin. Un
service religieux, dit par rvl. Milner, le chape
lain Anglican d'Ypres, eut lieu sur le rempart
Sud, oü un autel avait été amenagé sous le
portique Est de la colonnade. Après les chants
et les prières. M. Barton, directeur du pèleii-
nage, adressa une courte allocution faisant
ressortir les 3 enseignements a retirer de la
solennité présente les remerciments düs aux
héros qui sauvèrent l'Empire, la décision de
ne jamais oublier dans le lutur de vénérer leur
souvenir, et l'obligation ue propager partout
leurs idéés de sacrifice et de de voir. U ne trom
pette sonna ensui te le Last Post et le Reveille,
et les pèleiins chan èrent le God save the
King. Ils dtscendirent ensuite pour déposer
une couronne sous la voute, et la cérémonie
fut ainsi termiuée vers midi.
Ces visiteurs avaient leur quartier général a
Lille cü ils étaient arrivés le Dimanche soir.
Le Jeu li matin, la majorité de ces voyageurs
reprenaient la route de l'Anglcterre, tandis
qu'un certain nomore prolorgeait leur séjour
sur le continent pour aller visiter Paris. Ces
membres de la British Legion venaitnt des
Cornouailles, c\ st a aire de la pointe Sud-
Ouest de l'Angleterre.
Un autre groupe d'environ 3oo membres de
la oriiish Legion, venant des comlés Es" et
Quest iiu centre de l'Angleterre iloucester,
Oxford, etc.;, était également vtnu visiter
l'ancten front, oü eux mêmes, leurs maris, ou
pères ou parents, avaient passé pendant la
guerre. Leur quartier-géuéial était Roubaix,
d'oü ils excursionnaient tous les jours vers
des buts differents, .vlercredi, 14 grands auto
cars les déposaient ici a la Place Vanden-
peereboom. Ces visiteurs se répandirent en
ville, et sont repartis en autos a 3 heures.
