Juist zooals wij hier te Yper op in Novem
ber onze roemrijke Helden en deze der Bond-
genooten herdenken, worden telke jare te
Wimbledon, in 't begin van November, de
gesneuvelden van den wereldoorlog 1914 1918
herdacht en heeft er daar aan den voet van
het standbeeld, dat er te hunner eer is opge
richt, een grootsche plechtigheid plaats.
Wimbledon is een belangrijke voorstad van
Londen, de engelsche hoofdstad, en telt niet
min dan 61.000 zielen. Zij is bestuurd door
een gemeenteraad bestaande uit den burge
meester, 6 schepenen en 26 raadsleden.
Het Britsch Legioen, dat zoowat overal in
het Britsche Keizerrijk afdeelingen bezit en
waarvan er een ook hier in onze stad bestaat,
heeft te Wimbledon eveneens een zeer mach
tige afdeeling die terzelfdertijd ook deze is
van Merton, een andere aanpalende voorstad
van Londen.
Deze afdeeling van het British Legion
wan Wimbledon en Merion had nu besloten
den jaarlijkschen gewonen Herinneringsdag,
die dit jaar op Zondag 6° November 11. te
Wimbledon plaais greep, ep een gansch bij
izondere wijze op te luisteren met er den heer
Burgemeester va Yper, de stad die binst den
oorlog zoo hardnekkig door het Britsche
leger verdedigd werd, op uit te noodigen en
door het inrichten van een grootsch avond
feest in het theater van Wimbledon, waar
onder meer de Britsche Zegeboog der
Meenenpoort en h-;t optrekken der engelsche
Tommies naar de vuurlijn afgebeeld werd
door afdeelingen van al de diensten van het
Britsche leger die, al zingend van Tippe
rary Pack up your troubles» en andere
liederen van binst den oorlog, voor de
Meenenpoort voorbijtrokken.
Benevens deze uitnoodiging van het Bri
tish Legion o .tvmg MSobry, onze burge
meester, er nog ei n au dei e, nameliik vanwege
den mayor of burgemeester van Wimbledon
die vroeg om zijne stad m^t een officieel
bezoek ie willen vereeren.
Ingaande op deze vriendelijke uitnoodi
gingen, die groo'.elijks dc stad v per vereeren.
is de heer burgemeester dan op Zaterdag 5
Novemoer te Oostende ingescheept om 's an
<lerendaags de feestelijkheden van Wimble
don's Herinneringsdag bij te wonen.
Deze bestaan, zooals gezegd, uit een hulde
aan de gesneuvelden van den grooten oorlog,
's Morgens, om 11 uur, had een optocht plaats
naar het oorlugsgedenkteeken. Het voornaam
ste gedeelte van den stoet bestond uit drie
.groepen, ieder met muziek, waarin de leden
-der afdeeling van het British Legion van
Wimbledon en Merton, de verschillige oud-
jstrijdersvereenigingen, de plaatselijke afdee
ling van het Rood-Kruis, de cadetten, de
Girl Guides, de Bey Scouts, enz., meestapten.
Daarop volgde, enkele miuuten later, de ofïi
-cieele stoet, voorafgegaan door het processie-
kruis en de geestelijkheid, en bevattende de
Mayor van Wimbledon, M. J. W. Ramshaw,
J.P., en de Mayoress, Miss Ramshaw, de bur
gemeester van Yper, M. Sobry, C. B.E. de
schepenen van Wimbledon in scharlaken
Jdeed met hermelijn gegarnierd, de gemeente
raadsleden in 't blauw gekleed, en een groot
aantal andere overheidspersonen.
Om 12 u. i5 werd de plechtigheid aange
vangen door den Vicaris van WimbRdon,
Kanunnik A. H. Phelips, die met luide stem
het opschrift van het gedenkteeken voorlas.
Daarna werd de Last Post geblazen en,
na een voorlezing van een passend gedicht en
enkele aanroepingen van de aanwezigen, de
Reveille gevolgd van het nationaal lied.
Daarna werd het monument bebloemd door
den Mayor, door den heer Sobry, door Kanun
nik Phelips en door de voorzitters van al de
tegenwoordige maatschappijen, terwijl het
muziek van het 5de bataljon van het East
Surrey Regiment een gelegenheidsstuk ver
tolkte.
Deze plechtigheid werd gesloten met een
geestelijken dienst geleid door de Eerw. hee-
ren Douglas Mc Ritchie en J. Douglas Wood,
M. C. Na de lofzangen en gebeden kwam het
publiek op zijne beurt het monument bebloe-
m»n en om t' eindigen hield de Vicaris een
treffende aanspraak.
's Avonds om 6 uur werd de heer Sobry
door den Mayor en de Mayoress officieel in de
prachtige raadszaal van het stadhuis ontvan
gen in tegenwoordigheid van Admiraal Sir
Frederick Tudor, K. C. B., K. C. M. G., en
Lady Tudor, Luitenant-generaal sir Hugh
Jeudwine, K. C. B., K. C. I. E., en Lady
Jeudwine, Luitenant-colonel Rae, D^ S. O.,
den Hoog Commissaris van Canada vertegen
woordigende, en Mrs Rae, Eskader bevel
hebber T. R. Marsden, D. S. O., vertegen
woordiger van den Minister van Australië te
Londen, en Miss Marsden, Mr H. T. B.
Drew, vertegenwoordiger van den Hoog
Commissaris van Nieuw Zeeland, en Mrs

De Mayor, Coun. J. W. Ramshaw, stelde
den heer burgemeester Sobry aan de tegen
woordige overheden voor en sprak volgende
welkomrede uit
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Before expressing on behalf of Wimbledon,
a cordial welcome to the Burgomaster of
Ypres, T desire to give you a few particulars
which have been supplied to me by the
British Embassy in Brussels of the Burgo
master
Monsieur Sobry is in private life a Lawyer.
He was appointed Burgomaster in 1927. In
1928 he received the decoration of a Comman
der of the Order of the British Empire, which
was bestowed on him as the leading citizen
of the Town of Ypres in recognition of all
that the town, and town authorities had done
for Briti-h visitors to the war cemetery, and
for the British resident community there.
In 1928, Monsieur Sobry received H. R. H.
the Prince of Wales, who was present as a
member of the itntish Legion at a large
Service at the Menin Gate, conducted by the
Aichbish >p of Yoik Later in the year he
attended the Annual Festival Service of Toe.
H. in London At various times he has also
received other well known personalities, such
as Lord Plumer, the Earl of Athlone and
General Pulteney.
You will therefore understand. Ladies and
Gentlemen, that the Burgomaster has had a
distinguished career has done noble service,
and greatly honou-s us by his presence here
tonight.
Monsieur Burgomaster, I have to thark
you most cordially on behalf of the inhabi
'tants of Wimbledon, for the great honour you
have paid us by your visit to Wimbledon,
and particularly the pleasure it gives the
British Legion to know that you are interested
in the very fine work which they are so
joyfully undertaking. Your presence is an
inspiration to all of us, for at Ypres the
British Army fought side by side with the
Belgian Army in that terrible War, which, let
us hope, was in the truest sense, a War to
end War. Year by year the friendship of the
two Nations grows may it for ever remain
unimpaired
We trust that you. Monsieur Burgomaster,
will take home with you for the people of
Ypres, sentiments of our regard that your
recollection of this visit will always be a
source of pleasure and satisfaction to you,
and that you may be, by God's will, spared
for many years to devote yourself to the
Civic welfare of Ypres, and that life may
give you its richest rewards.

so highly Ypres, that He decorated it with
the Military Cross, and bestowed on its Bur
gomaster the juwel of Commander of the
glorious Order of the British Empire; and
you, also, appreciated so highly Ypres, that
you were so kind to invite its Burgomaster,
and prepared Him a magnificent reception.
The King and You, you appreciate Ypres,
because it was the courageous city, which
resisted, from 1914 to 1918, against Germany,
when it violated and occupied Belgium
The King and you, you appreciate Ypres,
because it was the battlefield wheré rushed,
during 4 years, innumerable British warriors
of England and Dominions, in order to fight
against innumerable German ennemies
The King and you, you appreciate Ypres,
because it was the Holy Ground, which drunk
the blood and received the bodies of 25o.ooo
British Heroes, who gave their lives for King
and Country, Right and Peace The King
and you, you appreciate Ypres, because it
was the Martyr City, which was violently
assieged and attacked .bombarded and gassed,
bruised and burned The King and you,
you appreciate Ypres, because it was, during
4 years, the Guardian Shield, which protected,
not only a party of Belgium and France, but
also the seriously menaced Straits and Eng
land The King and you, you appreciate
Ypres, because it was, with the British
Armies, the victorious City, where Germany
lost, and Great Britain won, where the war
finished, and Peace was reestablished
The King and you, you appreciate Ypres,
because it was and remains the City full of
souvenirs, where the British Empire erected,
not only very nice cemeteries, but also a
splendid Memorial, at Menin Gate, to the
glory of God who gave the victory, in memory
of the valiant British Armies which stood
there 4 years, and in honour of the fallen
British Heroes, who saved England, Belgium
and France.
Therefore you want te honour, and you do
love the City of Ypres Reciprocally, Right
Honourable Wimbledon and Merton Branch
of the British Legion, Ladies and Gentlemen,
the City of Vpres thanks you for your kind
regards, and presents you the hommage of its
deep respect the wonderful resurrected
City is happy to be able to love and thank
His Majesty King George and the British
People, spread over the world, because they
declared war against Germany in 1914 on
account of its violating Belgium,most unjustly;
the nearly rebuilc city presents the hom
mage of its admiration and gratitude to the
generous and courageous British Armies
which came from England and its Dominions,
in order to fight for Right and Peace in the
world the compassionate City deplores,
with many British Fathers and Mothers,
Widows and Orphans, Brothers and Sisters,
the sad loss of their fallen Sons and Husbands,
Fathers and Brothei s the thankful city
honours, every year, on the first of Novem
ber, solemnly and piously, the graves of all
the fallen Heroes, its saviours; the remem-
berful city listens religiously, every evening,
to the sounding of The Last Post, at Menin
Gate, over the famous battlefield and nume
rous graves the much visited city was

New Zealand The Principal defenders of
Ypres, the glorious Marshals French, Douglas
Haig and Plumer the Lord Mayors, Sirs
Newton and Batho of London Their Wor
ships, the Mayors of Wimbledon, Lambeth,
Lewisham, Westminster, Morpeth, Southend
on Sea, and others many glorious survivors
of the great war, Members of the Ypres
League, Toe H, and the British Legion, and
innumerable Fathers and Mothers, Widows
and Orphans, Brotheis and Sisters, of so
many fallen Sons and Husbands, Fathers and
Brothers
As Burgomaster of Ypres, I admire, honour
and love the British Armies which saved Bel
gium I desire for ever peace and friendship
between England and Belgium, and ever
more relations between Great Britain and
Ypres, I were happy if every British Gentle
man had the generosity to help in the resto
ration of the famous Clothhall, the soul of
Ypres, and I wish you all, and every one of
you, lor. g live, good'luck and prosperity.
Na deze ontvangst, had's avonds te 8 uur,
in het theater van Wimbledon, een heerlijk
herinneringsfeest plaats dat, naar de getuige
nis van groote engelsche dagbladen die er
breedvoerige verslagen over uitbrachten, een
der schoonste en aandoenlijkste feesten was
die daar ooit gegeven werden. De loge links
van het tooneel, waarin de Mayor, de May
oress en de heer Burgemeester Sobry plaats
hadden genomen, was met de belgische kleu
ren versierd, terwijl de loge er rechtover
gelegen, door de andere overheden bezet,
met de engelsche kleuren getooid was.
Het feest, dat met de Brabanqonne en
het God save the King begon, bestond uit
een kunstcencert gegeven door de muzieken
van het British Legion onder leiding van
M. J. Percy Bush, en van het 5de Bataljon
van het East Surrey Regiment, een proloog
