The Ypres Times.
IMPORTANT.
So many letters of appreciation of the YPRES TIMES have been addressed to us
that we have seriously begun to consider the advisibility of adopting a suggestion which
has been made to us by many readers, namely that the YPRES TIMES should in
future be published monthly, instead of quarterly as at present. The vital question is,
needless to say, one of finance. We should not feel justified in taking this big step forward
unless we felt reasonably sure of making ends meet.
Now the only way to make ends meet would be to charge members a nominal price
for the eight extra copies a year. That is to say, if the YPRES TIMES became
a monthly, members would continue to receive four copies a year absolutely
gratis, as at present, but would be charged, say sixpence, a copy, for the remaining
eight issues in the year. This amount, totalling four shillings for the year, could either
be paid in a lump sum, or in instalments as each issue was published.
In order, therefore, to give the Editor some indication of the amount of support
the proposal of a monthly magazine is likely to gain, all those who approve of the
suggestion and would be willing to back their opinion by subscribing to the extra issues
in the manner indicated, are invited to fill in the coupon below and forward it to the
offices of the League. Filling it in does not commit you in any way it is merely
needed to guide us to a right decision. See below.
SECRETARY'S NOTES.
BRANCHES.
London District.
The Anniversary of the Second Battle of Ypres
was celebrated at various places by branches of
the League. In the London district there were
Flag Days on the 22nd April in North Irnndon
and at Teddington and Hounslow in Middlesex,
and on the 13th May at Surbiton in Surrey. The
collections were made in conjunction with an
Appeal by F.-M. the Earl of Ypres for funds to
build our proposed permanent Hostel and Club
House at Ypres, and realised a satislactory sum
considering the bad weather prevailing on the
first day. There were also Celebrations at local
War Memorials at Hornsey on the 22nd April, and
at Surbiton on the 13th May. At Teddington and
Hounslow there were held special Church Parades
on Sunday the 23rd April. All these functions
were carried out with much keenness by the
Committees of those branches which organised
them, and special credit is due to Mr. Herbert
Sinclair of the North London branch, to Major
J. H. R. Cox of Teddington, and to Mrs. Gorton
Angier of Surbiton for devoting so much of their
time and energy to the necessary organisation.
Sheffield.
In these days of glorious sunshinethe crown
of the yearnothing is more irksome to the office
worker than to remain all day in the sombre shade
of four walls when Nature invites one to go out
into the green fields or by the river. Much as I
would like to do so, office routine prevents me
from joining the enticing run from Sheffield to
Rudyard Lake organised by Capt. Jack Wilkinson
for the Sheffield Members. The fishing and
splendid boating is not for me.
Will all those Members desiring to take part
in the Reunion dinner at the end of the Summer
Season kindly communicate with Capt. Wilkinson
at Ivydene," Fieldhead Road, Sheffield.
Nottingham.
All Members in Nottingham and district are
urged to go and view the Exhibition of Pictures
connected with the Ypres Salient which will be
announced at an early date by the Hon. Sec.,
Capt. J. Hetherington. The salon bids,|p be
an interesting one.
(Cut here.)
I approve of the suggestion to publish the YPRES TIMES monthly, and would be
willing to pay sixpence a copy (4s. per annum) for the extra eight copies, provided I received
four copies in the year free, as hitherto. This is quite independent of any view I may hold
on the subject of the Special Supplementary Number mentioned on page 89 of this issue.
