simply as Nature does her miracles. Those country lads and cockneys, those office boys
from little suburban houses and the old sheltered homes of England and Scotland, Ireland
and Wales, and of Dominions Overseas were superhuman in the things they did and
suffered without being aware of their own heroic quality. It was the spirit of the race
that worked in them, and old traditions of family and school of which they were
unconscious.
Standing there in one of these cemeteries of the Salient one's pity for this loss of youth,
one's anguish and rage because of the world's forgetfulness, is overwhelmed by the homage
of one's heart to the quality of that young manhood. A frightful doubt comes to one
lest it died with' them so that our race may never produce that quality again. But that
doubt is weakness.
The spjrit of those boys is not dead. It touches every man and woman whose spirit
goes on pilgrimage to where they rest. It is the greatest heritage we have, a new and
undying tradition. These cemeteries in the Salient will call to the younger generation,
and the courage of those men, and their laughter will strengthen our people in ordeals
yet to come. For we dare not be traitors to their loyalty, nor face the world with meanness
and bitterness and cowardice and hate, when they were lovers of fair play, and had no
malice in them, no funk and no guile.
