The constant fighting in the Salient and in Belgium was illuminated by countless
deeds of heroism, many of which passed unnoticed without official reward. But it is
worthy of note that sufficient were noticed to account for the awarding of no fewer than
ill Victoria Crosses12 in 1914, 22 in 1915, 2 in 1916, 50 in 1917 and 25 in 1918.
