The Ypres League has the advantage of possessing some very keen and energetic
Corresponding members, who are also excellent organisers. In certain towns and districts
the League asked their assistance to organise for Ypres Day, with the excellent results
shown in the following report
Carlisle.-Et.-Colonel Willan had the willing permission of our generous friend of last year, Mr.
Sydney Bacon, one of the best known proprietors in the Cinema world, to sell at his Cinemas, The
City Picture House and the Public Hall Cinema. Mr. Mooney and Mr. Whiles assisted in every possible
way and Mr. Naylor-Whalley, of the Star Cinema, gave his personal assistance with regard to the
sales. The Managers, with the support of their staffs, vied with each other to effect equally good sales
in their respective Cinemas, to the financial advantage of the Eeague.
Harrogate.Mrs. Briggs arranged a lecture on Ypres and the sale of the song at five Cinemas.
She was ably assisted by her two daughters, and we wish specially to thank Mr. R. H. Callam, of the
Scala, Mr. H. Perkins, of St. J ames's Hall, Mr. Grange, of the Central, Mr. J ames Holden, proprietor
of the Empire Variety Theatre, and Mr. Wilmot, of the Palace Picture House, for the personal interest
and assistance they gave us.
Matlock Miss Dickenson sold a considerable number of songs, and we would like to thank Mr.
Woodman, the Manager of the Cinema House, Mr. Richards, Managing Director of the Picture Palace,
and Mr. Randle, Manager of the Matlock Bath Pavilion, for their successful efforts.
Cheshunt. At Cheshunt and Waltham Cross, Ypres Day was organised by Capt. W. Castello,
J.P., C.C., who spoke so persuasively both at the Waltham Cross Palace Theatre and the Cheshunt
Cinema, that we had a good sum of money from both places. We should like to take this opportunity
of mentioning the interest taken bv Mr. Simster, of the Cheshunt Cinema, and his staff of Miss F. Rolls,
Miss A. Sipthorpe, Mr. William A. J. Squires, Mr. George Beer, and Mr. Phillip Barnes. At the
Waltham Cross Cmema the sales were entirely due to the great interest taken by the proprietor,
Mr. Booth, and his staff.
Nottingham and Hucknall.Mr. Marshall, who was organising at Hucknall, Notts., had the help of
Mrs. Marshall and Miss Lois Marshall. We would like to thank Mr. Stevenson, of the Scala Picture
House, and his orchestra for the able way in which they rendered the song. Mr. Watson, of the
Picture House, Nottingham, also sent us a very nice cheque from his Cinema, and we realise the
personal effort and trouble that he and his staff must have taken on Ypres Day.
^Cowss.—We ware very grateful for the patriotic support of Mr. Jones, of the Royalty Cinema.
Our Corresponding Member, Mr. Eloyd, got in touch with him, and it was entirely owing to Mr. Jones's
efforts that the League's propaganda has got so widely distributed in the Isle of Wight. It is only the
personal efforts of our Members, the Cinema Proprietors, and others interested in our cause that make
our day a success. Mr. Jones has been a real service and the League and we hope to welcome him as a
member.
Burton-on-Trent.At Burton-on-Trent Ypres Day was ably organised by Mr. M. Holmes. He
had the cordial support of Mr. E. A. Rowe, Manager of the Opera House, who spoke most efficiently
on the aims and objects of the League, and also arranged to have the song sung also of Mr. H. Wigley,
Anglesey Palace, and Mr. A. Marsted, The Electric Theatre, who made excellent sales in their Cinemas.
Mr. Gregory, Secretary of the British Legion, very kindly helped our representative, who, we are glad
to know, is always prepared to assist the British Legion. We had a substantial cheque from Burton-
on-Trent and are very grateful to all those who helped the League.
Croydon. At Croydon, Mr. Gibbons, through the kindness of Mr. Gurnell, Manager of the Scala,
sold songs in that Cinema, and we are very glad to think that so much of our propaganda was distributed
in Croydon through the medium of this song. Mr. Gibbons has only recently taken up his duties at
Croydon and is already showing an increased membership in that town.
Folkestone.Mr. Thompson (Corresponding Member), our organiser at Folkestone, had the support
of the Managers of the Regent (Dover), the Cinema de Luxe (Ashford), Picture Palace (Hythe), Electric
(Folkestone), Central Cinema (Folkestone), Playhouse (Folkestone), and with their sympathetic assist
ance and the able organisation of Mr. Thompson, Ypres Day at Folkestone was a very great financial
success.
