LONDON COUNTY COMMITTEE.
CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY.
The second annual Children's Christmas Party,
which was organised by the London County
Committee, was held on Saturday, January 16th,
in the Hall of the Alexandra Trust, City Road, E.C.
and proved a great success. The number attend
ing exceeded that of last year, despite the fact
that the weather was not altogether on its best
behaviour, as a period of snow had prevailed
for a few days, leaving the streets in rather a dis
mal state. However, such details did not damp
the enthusiasm of those present and everyone,
inspired with the spirit of Christmas, spent a jolly
time together.
The Party commenced with tea to which all
did ample justice, and this was followed by a
conjurer and ventriloquist performance, which
proved one of the great events of the evening and
was followed with keen interest by the children.
Master Peter Megarry, a member of the Junior
Division, came next, dressed in khaki, and sang
the League's song, Wipers." The warmest
thanks of the Committee and all present are due
to Master Megarry for the splendid way in which
he sang the song, especially, as we afterwards
learnt, it was his first performance it is hoped
that later on we shall see more of Master Megarry's
activities in this direction.
Then came, from the children's point of view,
the most important item of the evening, the
raid on the Christmas Tree, from which all
the children received some article. The Com
mittee are grateful to Mrs. Maskelyne for her kind
ness in giving away the toys to those present.
Bon-bons and games followed, and this brought
the evening to an end. But before closing this
account of the Party the London County Commit
tee would like to record their grateful thanks to
many friends and supporters of the party who
helped to make it a success, and especially to
Captain and Mrs. Maskelyne and Mr. Schlienger
for their kind gifts also Mrs. Wigan for her kind
help on the occasion.
The Committee hope that next time they may
have the pleasure of seeing many more present,
and especially urge that all members of the League
should enrol their children as members of the
Junior Division (Is. annually) in order that the
name of Ypres may be handed on and that
they may keep the memory for ever green of those
whom we are proud to remember.
Dance.London members will be interested to
learn that the N.W. London Branch are arranging
for a dance on Thursday, April 15th, at the
Drill Hall, High Street, Camden Town, N.W.I.
A good muster is expected, and tickets, 2s. each,
should be obtained at once from Mr. J ohn Boughey,
4b, Peabody Buildings, Russell Square, W.C.I.
The Chairman, Capt. C. Alliston,[would be glad
to receive donations for the purpose of providing
special dance prizes.
The London County Committee have arranged
an informal dinner and presentation on April 8th
at the Trocadero Restaurant to their hon.
secretary, Mr. John Boughey, in recognition of
his good work.
INFORMAL GATHERINGS.
The Informal Gatherings which have been held
by the London County Committee, usually on the
first Thursday in each month, have proved a great
success, as is evidenced by the larger number
attending and the keen interest displayed at the
meetings.
Hitherto the gatherings have been held at the
office at 9, Baker Street, but the numbers attend
ing have so increased that the London County
Committee have had to seek fresh accommodation.
The monthly meeting in March was held at the
Schools, 141, Cleveland Street, Gt. Portland
Street, W.l, and the attendance justified the
Committee's action in securing larger quarters.
The Committee are greatly indebted to Mrs.
Hugh Rayner, O.B.B., and the Earl of Ypres'
Own Scouts who came and gave a display at this
gathering, which was followed with keen en
thusiasm by the audience present. We hope we
may have the pleasure of. seeing the Earl of
Ypres' Own on a future occasion.
A vote of thanks is also due to the Rovers
who accompanied the Scouts, and whose help was
greatly appreciated.

Various suggestions have been made in con

carefully considered by the Committee, who wel
come any suggestions or criticisms for improving
thembut they would like to point out to
those who have not yet attended that there must
be many ex-Service friends of members living in
and around London who would welcome the
opportunity of meeting again just to renew an
old friendship made during the War period. Why
not arrange to meet at one of the informal gather
ings and have a chat over old times The hon.
secretary, London County Committee, will be
pleased to send an invitation to any friend on
being supplied with the name and address.
