LORD YPRES MEMORIAL.
The Ypres Times. 137
BUST TO BE PLACED IN THE CHURCH AT YPRES.
It is proposed to place a bust of Field-Marshal the Earl of Ypres in the memorial
church which is being built at Ypres as a national memorial, and an appeal has been
issued, signed by Field-Marshal Viscount Allenby and General Sir Philip Chetwode,
Officer Commanding at Aldershot.
Already many friends of the late Lord Ypres have subscribed to the memorial, among
them some of his French comrades-in-arms in the Great War, including Marshals Foch
and Joffre and Generals Gouraud and Weygand.
There is no doubt, states the appeal, that it was Lord Ypres' wish that any memorial
to be erected to him should be erected at Ypres and it adds
We owe it to Violet, Duchess of Rutlandherself an old friend of Lord Ypres
that Mr. Jo Davidson (the American sculptor) has undertaken to make another bust
in Burgundy stone, similar to that in New York." It is hoped that the bust will be
exhibited at next year's Royal Academy, after which it will be retained at Aldershot
until the church at Ypres is ready to receive it. It is proposed to devote anv surplus
funds to the transept of the church.
We feel sure that many members of the Ypres League wish to associate themselves
with this appeal to their late President, and donations can be forwarded direct to the
Secretary, Ypres League, 9, Baker Street, London, and marked Lord Ypres' Memorial.
