MEMORIES OF THE Vlth BATTALION, K.S.L.I.
When Britain called her sons to arms,
They poured from Shropshire mines and farms
To face, for dear Old England's sake,
Most ghastly forms that death could take.
Those hours they lined up row by row
At Blackdown, in the driving snow
You recollect them, standing there
Those raw recruitswhat men they were!
The day they reached the deadly trench.
Did any Shropshire youngster blench
Let every mother tell her child
How dying Williams passed and smiled,
And whilst the stretcher bore him west,"
He faced his comrades with a jest,
And showed with what a courage high
A Shropshire boy could laugh and die.
Across the shell-swept Yser bridge,
Beneath the deadly Pilkem Ridge,
Beyond the crashing Menin Gate,
They carried on and laughed at fate.
Or wrote a letter on their knee.
I hope you're well, as this leaves me
What nerves of steel! What hearts of gold!
Those boys of old! Those boys of old!
And as the months run into years,
When statesmen show unworthy fears,
Does any Shropshire soldier doubt
That his stout heart will see it out,
Or lose his faith that British strength
Will win its great reward at length
You beat his men you beat his art,
And broke the brutal German's heart.
The boys I knew, the boys I knew,
What flawless metal through and through!
What wonder if I've nigh forgot
The hardship of a soldier's lot
My mem'ries are of comrades true.
Of you, of you, and you, and you,
And I would join again to stand
With men like you on either hand.
John Latham.
