YPRES MEMORIAL CHURCH. YPRES MEMORIAL SCHOOL. The Ypres Times. 199" Extract from Report by SIR REGINALD BLOMFIELD, R.A. The site of the proposed Church is a corner plot at the north-east corner of the street facing the west end of the Cathedral. For reasons of economy I have designed a Church without arches, with a chancel raised three steps, a small vestry and choir vestry on the north side, the upper part of heating chamber and stairs to same, and organ chamber on. the south side A semi-circular barrel vault runs the whole length of the Churchat the west end is a small baptistery and on the north side is a porch, over which might be built a small belfry tower in the future. In general treatment I have adopted the traditional manner of Ypres as most suitable for the building and most in accordance- with local feeling. The material will be the Flemish bricks, a very sparing use of stone- for copings and the like, and tiles or small slates for the roof. The accommodation provided is 158 in the nave, and 24 in the chancel, total 182: reckoned in pews, but I recommend chairs not seats for the nave, and the Church would! accommodate 200. Oak stalls of a simple design would be wanted for the chancel. The total cost is estimated at from 7,000 to £8,000, inclusive of the following provisions The baptistery and porch might be held back till funds are available, saving about £800. The rest of the Church should, if possible, be built at one go, for economical reasons, more especially in regard to the steel principals for the roof. It is proposed to place the Memorial to The Earl of Ypres in south wall opposite the- entrance, where it will be well seen and well lit from the great west window. The most suitable subjects for gifts would be the great wooden cross under the chancel! arch, the choir stalls, the pulpit and reading desk, and a reredos to the altar. Stained glass windows, unless they are kept very light, are undesirable in a Church of this kind owing to lack of light, but there would be no objection to Memorial Coats of Arms set in clear glass, should these be desired by any donors. After paying for the site and all expenses there is a balance of over One Thousand Pounds, and another Three Thousand rounds is urgently required to complete the building. The Foundation Stone of the Church will be laid by Field Marshal Lord Plumer on Sunday, 24th July, at 2 p.m. The inscription on the Foundation Stone is To the Glory of God and in Memory of Ypres. This Stone was laid by Field-Marshal Lord Plumer on the 24th July. 1927." The Archbishop of Canterbury is issuing a special Form of Prayer, which can be appro priately used on the 24th July, due notice of which will appear in the Press. Printed copies of the Prayer can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary, Ypres Memorial Church Fund, 0, Baker Street, London, any time after the 10th July. MEMORIAL TO LORD YPRES. This is taking the form of a bust of the late Field-Marshal, done during his life-time bv Mr. Jo. Davidson. The bust is now on view in the Royal Academy, Burlington House, in Gallery No. VI, number in catalogue 16(17. ARCHITECT'S REPORT. I propose to place the School on the south-west corner of the site, with playground to east of it, leaving space for a separate entrance, and for a parsonage house next to the road.
