then turning, strolled back slowly to its point of emergence and disappeared.
In the morning I mentioned the matter to one or two of my mates. Their view was
that some of our men who got the wind up badly left the camp and went down the railway
line a bit, where better cover from shells and bombs was to be found. This seemed such
a feasible explanation that I thought no more of the occurrence. But not one of us said

Indeed, it wasn't until the war was over and I was returned to civil life that, reflecting
upon the strange appearance, the question suddenly occurred to me. Could that have
been a ghost Truly there was something about its whole demeanour and bearing that
precluded the idea of its being human. As it walked it seemed unconscious of the noise
and the dangers that surrounded it. Its step was measured, just like a soldier's on parade,
but there the resemblance to matters military ceased. Shall we say it had once been a
soldier now changed to something else like so many of its comrades and was wandering
about the battle area without aim and without a home. Alas, poor ghost
