DINNER AND DANCE.
The London County Committee endeavours to
carry out the many suggestions put forward by
the members, and as a result of this policy a new
note was struck on the occasion of the Third
Annual Dinner, when, on Thursday, April 28th,
1927, a Dinner and Dance were held at the Man
chester Hotel, Aldersgate Street, London, E.C.I.
The large number of members and their friends
present were received in the reception room and
lounge by Colonel P. L. Ingpen, D.S.O. (1st W.
Yorks Regt.), who took the chair, and members
•of the Committee.
The New Broadway Dance Band was in attend
ance throughout the evening, and rendered popular
classics during the dinner and new dance numbers
afterwards. Dinner commenced promptly, and
the menu chosen for the evening was considered
by all as excellent, as was also the service.
The toast of The King," proposed by the
Chairman, was followed by the singing of the
National Anthem, accompanied by the band.
In proposing the toast of The London County
Committee,"Col. H. V. Combs spoke of the splendid
activities of the Committee and of the able manner
in which all the functions were arranged by it.
He regretted that Capt. F. H. Davies, of the
London County Committee, was unable to be
present owing to illness, and, after relating a
few amusing stories, appealed to all to support
the Committee whole-heartedly in future events.
The toast was received with great acclamation.
Major Montague Jones, O.B.E., Chairman of
the London County Committee, replied, and gave
an outline of the past year's activities, and an
nounced that the 5th Reunion Smoking Concert
would take place in October at the Caxton Hall,
Victoria Street, S.W.I, when he hoped to see
greater numbers than ever. Concluding, he read
a telegram received from Capt. F. H. Davies
wishing all present a merry evening.
Major E. B. Waggett, D.S.O. (Vice-Chairman
of the Executive Committee) proposed the toast
of The Chairman," welcoming Colonel P. L.
Ingpen, D.S.O., on the occasion of his first visit
to a League function.
Col. Ingpen rose and stated that he was more
than pleased that he had consented to preside
at the dinner and hoped to be present at future
events. He congratulated the Committee on the
excellent attendance and wished it success in its
future efforts for the League.
During the evening a most prized souvenir of
Ypres, given to the Committee by Mr. S. Jones
for the purpose of raising funds, was auctioneered
by Col. H. V. Combs. The souvenir, consisting of
framed poppies and cornflowers picked at Dicke-
busch, was auctioned to Mrs. E. Edwards for the
sum of /3 5s., after much excited bidding.
