provided the necessary arrangements could be made, on the following Sunday, July
ioth. The Eritish Broadcasting Company, on being approached, regretted their inability
to allow an appealbut the}' courteously permitted the announcement of Bord Plumer's
message, and our thanks, and those of many pilgrims, are due to the B.B.C. for the
admirable way in which it was rendered.
The result exceeded all expectations. Sir William Berry, on behalf of the Daily
Sketch, subscribed 500 guineas, thereby removing all anxiety so far as the urgent cases
were concerned. The Daily Mail published Lord Plumer's S.O.S., and by July 12th
we had to close the Fund, as there was no more accommodation on the boat, which had
been specially chartered for the occasion.
The figures given below may be of interest to my readers.
Subscriptions to the Fund totalled £2,252 6s. Of the 593 subscribers who gave their
names, 450 resided in the country and 143 in London but thirteen of them gave no
