THE YPRES TIMES
The Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph and Native War Memorial was probably the most
impressive ceremony that has ever been witnessed in Nairobi. A great throng, headed by His Royal
Highness the Prince of Wales, gathered to pay their homage to the dead. The great square was formed
by ex-service men and women, African ex-service men, and the guard of honour of the King's African
Rifles with the choir and troops of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts.
Gathered within the square were representatives of many races and of all branches of Empire,
headed by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Behind the Heir to the Throne stood His Excellency
the Governor, Sir Edward Grigg, with the Hon. Lady Grigg, the clergy led by the Rt. Rev. the Bishop
of Mombasa. Dense crowds of all the communities in the Colony joined in the, service.
The large wreath on the right was placed by Corporal C. H. Slater on behalf of the Ypres League.
H.R.H. the Prince of Wales generously subscribed towards this wreath.
At the close His Royal Highness stepped forward to lay the first wreaths at the base of the Cenotaph
and the Native War Memorial.
Following His Excellency and the Hon. Lady Grigg, who placed their floral tributes beside those of
His Royal Highness, a long procession in which each person carried floral tributes gradually formed
from various points. His Royal Highness stood between the two Memorials until the last of the wreaths
had been laid.
