THE YPRES TIMES
CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY.
One of the chief activities of the London
County Committee is the Annual Children's
Party, which was held this year on January
5th in the Mary Ward Settlement, Tavistock
Place, W.C., kindly lent by the Council of the
Settlement to whom we are very grateful.
At the commencement of the evening a
letter was received from Viscount French
expressing his regret at not being able to attend,
and wishing the party a very happy evening.
The hall was exceptionally well decorated,
owing to the kindness of Messrs. Selfridge in
supplying numerous flags, for which we are
much indebted. At 4 p.m. the children sat
down to tea at highly-decorated tables served
by a wiling band of helpers who were kept
busy handing round tea, bread and butter and
cakes.
After tea the performance of the Royal
Punch and Judy Show delighted the junior
members, but a few of the younger ones appeared
rather mystified at the noise created by Mr.
Punch.
Games and musical chairs followed, and prizes
were given.
The chief event of the evening was the
raid upon the well-illuminated Christmas
tree, on which eyes had been focussed through
out the evening. Each child received a present,
and crackers, boxes of chocolates, apples and
oranges were evenly distributed amongst them.
The Committee very much regretted the
unavoidable absence of their chairman. Major
Montague Jones, O.B.E., but they were very
pleased to have the company of Mr. Montague
and Mrs. Maskelyne.
Captain Alliston, on behalf of the London
County Committee, addressed a few words to
those present, and expressed warmest thanks
to all who had helped to make the evening a
success.
The London County Committee desire to
place on record their sincere gratitude to all
who so generously sent donations, and their
equal thanks are due to Mr. F. J. Pattison, Mr.
E. G. Holmes, Mr. Cameron, Mrs. Glover, Mr.
Hadley, Mr. E. A. S. Rayner, O.B.E., and Mr.
W. A. Stemp.
