I It was fit that this commemoration should have been conducted by the Rev.
P. B. Clayton, M.C., the Padre loved by all who served in the Salient, and who did
such a lot for the troops by the founding of Toe H at Poperinghe. It was a
real pleasure to hear his voice announcing that great hymn of remembrance,
Kipling's Recessional. How all sang, despite the fact that hearts were full.
Then.came an inspiring address on the text:
For conscience sake, whereof ye must meet, paying tribute, also
rendering therefore to all their due honour to whom honour."
No words have been more strangely misinterpreted than those with which
this passage beginsFor Conscience Sake.' All Christian people must be loyal
citizens, and therefore we are here enjoined by God's Own Book to take up the
state in hope, faithfully, and that is why we are here gathered, despite years
between, to Remember,' and this year to pay again our unfailing tribute to them,
