SOME five years ago considerable subsidences took place in the pathways along the
ramparts of Ypres owing to the decay of the timbering of British dug-outs under
neath. At the same time the canal bank between the basin and Essex Farm

occurred to show that there were large galleries and chambers underground, but about
eight months ago the main road from Ypres to Lille fell in owing to the collapse of a large
German dug-out just to the east of St. Eloi, with the result that the road was blocked
for months and traffic had to be diverted around by Wytschaete and Oostaverne.
Shortly after this the Menin Road caved in some fifty yards east of the level crossing
at Hell Fire Corner. This marked the position of a tunnel under the road constructed
