THE YPRES TIMES
121
To The Secretary,
Ypres League.
Dear Sir,
It is very kind of you to send me that photo
graph of the wreath which you placed on the
Thiepval Memorial. It is so beautifully clear,
and having seen the site, I can picture exactly
how it looks. I saw the stones with their names
sent out from England.
I do not think you of the Ypres League who
have worked so hard to give comforting memories
realize what a big thing you have accomplished,
and how grateful, though dumb and slow in
exposing our gratitude, we all feel. These con
ducted League tours and the marvellous work
of the Graves Commission were an inspiration.
Again with my grateful thanks.
I remain.
Yours sincerely,
Plaxtol. V. M. de Winton.
To The Secretary,
Ypres League. August 28th, 1932.
Dear Sir,
I must thank you very much for the excellent
way in which you organized our trip to Ypres.
We had a wonderful time, thanks to the kind
reception we received at the Hotel Splendid
and Britannique. The attendance and meals
were first-class, and the kindness and efficiency
of your representative, Mr. Parminter, who
conducted us to Mazingarbe, and the way he
explained, untiringly, the positions of the Allied
Forces and Jerry was beyond praise. I learned
more about the Salient in those few hours than
I ever knew while serving in and out of the line,
and I can fully realize what a tough job G.H.Q.
had in organizing the defence of Ypres.
Your splendid arrangements made the trip
plain sailing, and please accept again our many
thanks and with best wishes to yourself and the
Ypres League.
I remain, Sir,
Yours faithfully,
J. Macdonald.
Littlehampton
To the Secretary,
Imperial War Graves Commission.
May 19th, 1932.
Dear Sir,
Having just returned from a visit to the
Somme Memorials and Cemeteries, I feel I
must convey to you who are responsible for
them my sincerest gratitude and appreciation
for the way in which the Cemeteries are kept
and the wonderful Memorials at Thiepval and
Arras, which will make all who visit them proud
of being British.
I should also like to thank you for giving me
the name of the Ypres League, who made all
my travelling arrangements most efficiently.
They, together with your representatives in
France, were most kind and helpful, for which
I shall always be most grateful to you.
Yours truly,
Madeleine Riddelsdell.
LONDON COUNTY COMMITTEE.
INFORMAL GATHERINGS.
Before the issue of the October edition of
the Ypres Times is published we shall have
commenced the monthly Informal Gatherings,
which will be continued until June, 1933. We
mention, for those who are not familiar with
these gatherings, that they are held on the
third Thursday in each month from 7 to 10 p.m.
at the Bedford Head Hotel, Maiden Lane,
Strand, W.C.2.
The object of these reunions is to promote
the spirit of comradeship and to bring the
members together in order to further the
interest in the Ypres League. Also, these
meetings give an opportunity of chatting over
old times spent in the Salient. We hope that,
if any of our members have not yet been able to
enjoy an evening with us, they will make a
point of doing so during the coming season and,
-in the event-ef their wishing-to bring friends,-the
London County Committee will be pleased to
welcome them.
Programmes for the season are being organized
and we trust that we may receive the same
loyal support as in the past. Should anyone
feel disposed to arrange an evening's programme,
such an offer will be accepted with gratitude.
The Committee wish to thank all members for
their staunch help during the past year, and
again rely on the same valued support in the
future.
Obituary.
We regret to announce the death of Mrs.
Stocker, one of the most loyal members of the
League, who rarely missed any of the London
County Committee Informal Gatherings. We
extend to Mr. Stocker and family our deepest
sympathy in their sad bereavement.
