JARDS' PARADE IN COMMEMORATION OF "YPRES DAY," DURING THE REV. P. B. CLAYTON'S ADDRESS.
have been upon this country a debt of six thousand millions to be paidthe whole of this country
from North to South would have been occupied by the troops of our conquerors until such
time as the debt was paid. Every Colony would have been taken away from us; our children
would be a helot people. English persons would have to step off the pavement to allow our
conquerors to hold it. All these things would have been our fate. Therefore I say in the sight
of history we are debtors and more than that within the sight of God these men not only
saved us.
"It was not a simple fact this great episode or holding of the immortal line which opened
that great chorus of sacrifice which held the salient of Ypres through those years. Not only
do we look back on the great leaders who have passed into the 'flame invisible' beyond the sight
of manGeneral Fitzclarence, the 20th Brigade, the second and seventh Divisions, the 3rd Cavalry
Corps, and not only these records but the glory of every regiment still fighting on and on.
These men, by their lives and character taught us faith, constancy, brotherly lovethey taught
us unselfishness which leads to sacrifice, and here to-day it is no time for sermons but a time
for praise indeed, and to us their sacrifice shall be our example and their inspiration our true
legacy.
