FIRST ANNUAL BALL OF THE COLCHESTER DISTRICT BRANCH. COLCHESTER DISTRICT BRANCH. The 1st Annual Ball organised by the Col chester and District Branch was held at the Red Lion Hotel, Colchester, on November 15th. The function was a great success and 150 were present. Among those who brought parties were The Chairman, Colonel H. W. Herring, M.C., Major G. C. Benham, M.C., Mr. Gerald Stanford, Captain M. Leach, M.C., and Captain C. P. Thomas. The dance band of the 4th Queen's Own Hussars provided the music for the dancing, which was kept going until 2 a.m. Everyone present accorded the Ball as one of the best held in the town recently, so it is hoped that next year even a more successful function will be held. A special vote of thanks is due to Captain C. P. Thomas, Hon. Secretary of the Ball Committee, and to Mr. M. McKinley for thefr indefatigable work in making the event such a financial success for the Branch, Whist Drive. The Colchester Branch held a very success ful whist drive at Jacklin's Café, on November 23rd. There were 88 players at this initial drive in the history of the Branch and the awards were presented to the winners by Mrs. Herring, wife of Colonel Herring, the Chair man of the Branch Ladies 1, Mrs. Howe, 190; 2, Mrs. Lassam, 179; 3, Mrs. Wilkinson, 178; highest half, Mrs. Broom, 98; lowest score, Miss Farrell, 136; lucky competitions, Mrs. T. Richer and Mrs. Bunting. Gentlemen 1, Mr. F. Wright, 176; 2, Mrs. Snow (playing as a gentleman), 171, after cutting; 3, Mr. Portway, 171; highest half, Mr. Kirkham, 89; lowest score, Mr. Whittaker, 134 There were generous prize-donors. Captain A. C. Palmer was the M.C., and those assisting were Captain C. Rooney, M.C., Captain Leighton and the Branch Hon, Secretary, Mr. Hubert Snow.
