When Yper town was built anew Upon its ancient site, When hotels grew like mushrooms Upon a summer night, When shops appeared like magic, When churches grew apace, When fields were dug and planted And the landscape changed its face; As knobbly as of yore, Why cobbles were not changed for roads That make the feet less sore. Perhaps 'tis done that pilgrims May not have an easy shoe But should hobble on the cobbles As good pilgrims ought to do. GRANDE PLACE, YPRES
