ANNUAL MEETING THE YPRES TIMES 59 THE LONDON COUNTY COMMITTEE THURSDAY, APRIL 26th, 1934 YPRES LEAGUE OFFICES 20, Orchard Street, Portman Square, W.l. Informal Gatherings BEDFORD HEAD HOTEL, Maiden Lane, Strand, W.C.2 CHILDREN'S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY. Anyone passing the Westminster City School on Saturday, January 13th would have paused to listen to the unaccustomed sounds of revelry issuing from that classic building. The occasion was the Annual Christmas Party arranged by the London County Com mittee of the Ypres League, and once again the large hall of the School had been made available by the kindness of the Governors and lavishly decorated with bunting by several energetic and agile members of the Committee. An extra large Christmas Tree shared the platform with the music stands of the Enfield Orchestral Society, whose members gave a splendid selection of lively and appropriate airs under the skilled direction of Mrs. Peabody. The 146 children present proved to be good mixersand by the time tea was served the ice had been broken and a real Christmas spirit of goodwill and comradeship prevailed. After tea came the excitement of "Musical Chairs," Musical Bumpsand other games dear to the juvenile heart, and shall it be whispered that not a few grown-ups also took part with evident enjoymentThen came an hour or more of the most thrilling conjuring tricks and the youngsters were held spellbound as endless yards of ribbon were produced from a borrowed hat, coins and eggs were extracted from the most unlikely places and a bottle of milk was found to be in two places at onceThis was followed by more games, after which there was a distribution of Xmas Crackers and numbered tickets which entitled each child to a present from the Christmas Tree. Father Christmas himself then appeared and carried on the good work of presenting the gifts and addressed a few homely and kindly words to the kiddies. On leaving, every child received a further gift of fruit and sweets and as one watched the tired but happy crowd filing past, the words of Tiny Tim in the immortal Christmas Carol came distinctly to my mindGod bless us, every one." During the evening we had the pleasure of a visit front Captain and Mrs. R. Henderson- Bland, whose work for the Ypres League in America is so much appreciated. To all who in any way contributed to the success of the party, we tender our grateful thanks. Especially are we indebted to Mrs. Peabody and her Orchestra, to Mr. Elsee for the conjuring entertainment, to Mrs. Glover, Miss Greaves and Miss Riddelsdell for their efforts on cook-house fatigueand to Captain H. D. Peabody for again imperson ating Father Christmas in his own inimitable way.
