League Secretary's Notes
THE YPRES TIMES
120
A hearty welcome is extended to all those
who have enrolled as members of the Ypres
League since the publication of our last quarterly
edition of the Ypres Times The summer is
not usually regarded as a successful recruiting
season, because people are rightly saving up
in contemplation of their deserved holidays, but
despite this we are encouraged to have enrolled
quite a number of new members, many of whom
have joined as a result of accompanying our
pilgrimages to the battlefields.
In August we had the honour to record the
collective Life Membership of the 9th (Scottish)
Divisional Association, and the Ypres League
scroll certificate, suitably inscribed, has been
gratefully acknowledged by the Hon. Secretary,
Major A.A. Tyer, M.V.O., T.D.
During 1934 our pilgrimages have been
exceedingly well represented and it may be of
interest to insert the following summary

In addition we have had pleasure to make
travel arrangements for our members and friends
who preferred to proceed independently to the
cemeteries and battlefields. As last year, the
pilgrimages and tours have been carried out in
most favourable weather which added consider
ably to their success, and our sincere thanks are
due to the Ypres League representatives at
the battlefield centres for their efficient trans
port arrangements.
We would like to draw attention to the
Ypres League Deposit Scheme for those desirous
of visiting France and Flanders under the
League's auspices and for which forms will be
sent on application to the Secretary.
With regard to our Branches, Purley have
set the pace in recruiting and their popular
golf competitions during the summer months
have created great interest and pleasure. We
are pleased to hear that December 6th next has
been earmarked for the first Branch Dance and
we extend our hearty good wishes for its success.
Our Colchester Branch have also embarked
on summer activity by making a pilgrimage to
Ypres under the auspices of the League. The
party was accompanied by the Branch Chairman
Lieut. Colonel H.W. Herring, M.C.
The London County Committee are busily
preparing their winter programmes for month
ly Informal Gatherings and Annual Smoking
Concert to be held in October, and at the same
time they are secretly hoping to land at last
that elusive recruiting prize.
We earnestly appeal to all our staunch
supporters to continue to bear in mind the
importance of recruiting a new member whenever
an opportunity occurs. The League has, so
far, successfully extricated itself out of the
prolonged depressing period of the past few years
and now we want each member to make a fur
ther special effort to recruit one relative or
friend during the forthcoming winter months,
because the united endeavour of doing just
this little bitwill cement the position of
the League for years to come.
In view of the fact that this is the last
quarterly edition of 1934, we would like to wish
our faithful members a very happy Christmas,
and at the same time ask them to accept our
grateful thanks for their generous co-operation
which we have so much enjoyed and valued in
the old year.
COLLECTION OF TINFOIL
We have announced in previous editions of
the "Ypres Times" that a collection of tinfoil is
being made by headquarters eventually to be
sold in aid of the League's funds. We are
immensely indebted to those who have given
their valuable time to the collection of this silver
paper and hope that we may look forward to
receiving further supplies during the winter
months.
