Informal Gatherings

THE YPRES TIMES
Lieut.-General Sir William Pulteney, after
welcoming the Military Attachés, expressed his
personal regret that the Belgian Ambassador was
unable to attend and concluded his address with
some interesting remarks on the Memorial Rose
Window which is to be erected in St. Martin's
Cathedral at Ypres in memory of the late King
Albert of the Belgians.
During the short interval, opportunity was
afforded many to renew old acquaintance
and relate reminiscences of the stirring time
spent together in those far-off days. Continuing
the programme, various turns were alternated
with musical selections ably rendered by the
Stewart-Carter Octet," under direction of
Mr. J. A. Shepherd. These musicians offered
their services again when it became known that
the Enfield College of Music Orchestra was
prevented for the first time from performing at
this particular function owing to the illness of
their Conductor, Mrs. Doris Lee Peabody. After
the sounding of the Last Post," Captain H. D.
Peabody, D.C.M., recited Laurence Binyon's
To The Fallen," which was followed by the
Reveille."
An extremely pleasant evening closed about
11 p.m. with the assembly joining lustily in
Community Singing of well-known war-time
choruses, an item that is always most popular
in these programmes.
Hearty congratulations are extended to those
responsible for the arrangements of such an
excellent entertainment, and most of those
present must have felt that it is a jolly good
thing for us, the almost forgotten old warriors,
that there still exists a link with those epic
times of 1914 to 1918 in the form of the Ypres
League.
Please book these dates in your Diary.
