inscription This memorial was erected by his friends in memory of Field-Marshal
the Right Honble. Sir John Denton Pinkstan French, Earl of Ypres, P.C., K.P., C.B.,
O.M., G.C.V.O., K.C.M.G., born 1852, died 1925. He commanded the British Army in
France from the outbreak of
the Great War to December,
1915. His courageous leader
ship in front of Ypres helped
to save the Allied Forces in
the great crisis of the War."
Dedication Ceremony.
The dedication ceremony
was performed by the Dean
(Dr. Hewlett Johnson), who
was asked by Sir Charles
Warde to accept the tablet
on behalf of the Cathedral
body, in the presence of the
vast congregation which had
assembled for the Armistice
service, and the present Earl
of Ypres then placed a
wreath of Flanders poppies
beneath the tablet.
The 15th 19th King's
Royal Hussars sent a
Trumpet-Major and four
trumpeters to sound the
Last Post and Reveille after
the dedication ceremony.
Thus the ceremony was
concluded with the most
poignant of all forms of
military ritual in honour of
the dead.
